Tips and Tricks For Travelling With Kids
Traveling with kids can be a fun adventure with the right planning! Here are some tips and tricks to make the journey smoother and more enjoyable for everyone:
1. Plan Ahead but Stay Flexible
- Prepare an itinerary but keep it flexible. Kids can get tired or need extra breaks, so build in downtime.
- Book accommodations that are kid-friendly, like hotels with family suites or vacation rentals with extra space and amenities like a kitchen.
2. Pack Smart
- Carry essential items: diapers, wipes, snacks, water bottles, and a change of clothes for each kid (and maybe one for you!).
- Pack light: Bring multi-use items and essentials, but don’t overpack. Many things can be bought at your destination.
- Use packing cubes or separate bags for each child’s clothes to stay organized.

When we went on our road trip to Florida, we purchased these and the kids absolutely loved them! So did we! They were able to hold all their toys, snack and drinks. I highly recommend getting these if you have an upcoming road trip.
3. Entertainment and Comfort
- Bring entertainment: Pack books, games, tablets with downloaded shows/movies, coloring books, and toys. Headphones are a great idea for long flights or car rides.
- Comfort items: A favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or pillow can help kids feel more at home while traveling.

4. Snacks, Snacks, Snacks
- Healthy snacks like fruit, granola bars, and crackers can help keep kids satisfied between meals. Avoid sugary treats to minimize energy spikes and crashes.
- Pack snacks in individual portions to minimize messes and fights over sharing.

5. Prepare for Flights or Long Drives
- Early boarding: Many airlines allow families to board early. Use this time to get settled without the rush.
- Movement breaks: Let kids stretch and move around during layovers or rest stops. For long flights, encourage bathroom trips or short walks up the aisle.
- Time zone adjustments: Try to adjust sleep schedules before traveling if heading to a different time zone.
6. Expect the Unexpected
- Travel insurance: If you’re going far, consider getting travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip interruptions.
- Have a backup plan: Things may not go perfectly, so have alternatives in mind, like nearby restaurants or activities that work even in bad weather.
7. Involve the Kids
- Let them help pack: Giving them some control (like choosing their toys or snacks) can make them feel excited about the trip.
- Teach them about the destination: Show them pictures, videos, or books about where you’re going so they have something to look forward to.
8. Stay Positive and Patient
- Travel can be overwhelming for kids. Keep a positive attitude, even when things go awry. Your calm energy can help ease their stress.
Bonus: Travel Games and Activities
- For road trips or flights, have some travel games ready, like “I Spy,” “20 Questions,” or printable activity sheets.
